Handbags that are luxurious can enhance a woman's elegance. An all-season handbag is not the best choice. Instead, invest in quality handbags that are durable and will last a lifetime. Below is a selection of the top luxury handbags that well-respected fashion brands have to share with you.
1. THE LOUIS VUITTON SEEDY
Our top-ranked luxury handbag: The LV Speedy. The LV Speedy is a classic style that's been around for nearly 90 years. This bag was originally known as the Express and was introduced in 1930. A name that meant convenience, it represented a bold departure for a company best known for hard-sided suitcases or steamer trunks. The Speedy, now known as the LV Monogram Canvas, was a 30-centimetre satchel made of LV monogram fabric. It had a silhouette similar to a duffle bag and a doctor’s bag.
It had a top zipper closure, two rolled handles and piping. The zipper pull was made from vachetta (untreated Italian leather) that is a LV design signature. Later variants were created as women searched for reasons to own more Speedys, or to personalize their favorite Speedy. The Speedy Bandouliere is now a Speedy Bandouliere with a three-piece, adjustable, removable strap that can be used as a crossbody, shoulder, or crossbody bag.
2. THE HERMES KELLY
The Hermes Kelley was the first bag to be created long before the Hermes Bilkin (see below). Robert Dumas, a member in the Hermes family, designed the bag. He based it on the Sac a Courroies Hermes made to carry saddles. Dumas changed the shape to make it a real purse. He used a trapezoid shape and added a stiff handle. The flap was kept closed with pull straps.
Grace Kelly, a film star, picked one up in 1954 while filming To Catch a Thief. Grace Kelly was born Princess Grace, Prince of Monaco, in 1956. She began using the Kelly bag to hide her bump from the paparazzi.
3. THE CHANEL CLASSIC FLAPGabrielle Coco
Chanel designed and created this handbag to be fully hands-free. It was a groundbreaking idea at the time that the Classic Flap was launched in February 1955. It was the quilted leather that Chanel would use to make her handbags, so she suspended it from a long, metal chain.
You can still see the open pocket at the back and the turn-lock closure. There was also a burgundy liner and a zippered inner pocket. Karl Lagerfeld, however, had the idea to use that turnlock as a branding opportunity and add the double-C logo of Chanel to that turnlock in the 1980s. 2.55, a reference to the style’s debut, is a Classic Flap without the double-C twist-lock.
4. THE HERMES BRIRKIN
Jane Birkin was an English actress who, in France, is best known for her relationship with Serge Gainsbourg. Jean-Louis Dumas was on a flight to London from Paris.
Birkin claimed at the time that she carried a wicker cart everywhere and couldn't find a weekend handbag she loved. After her wicker was too big to fit in an overhead bin and it spilled, Birkin and her fellow passenger spent the rest on the flight discussing purses. They also sketched their ideas on the backsick bag.
Dumas presented Birkin to her with the results from their collaboration in 1986. It wasn't until the 1990s when Birkin fever took hold. This resulted in five-year waiting lists and counterfeits as well as a secondary market where Birkins value more than bluechip stocks. Hermes has managed to keep its magic in an age when smartphones and inboxes abound with special offers and images of influencers.
5. THE LOUIS VUITTON NOFULL
They were already well-known when the Luxury Tote Handbags first appeared in 2007. The Neverfull was lighter and larger than the Speedy. It was also smaller and lighter.
The Neverfull GM (with a 15.7" opening) is appropriately named. To encourage collecting, LV currently offers dozens Neverfull options. Personalization includes Goyard-style monogramms and Goyard-style stripes. Stickers and coloured canvas are also available.
